DESIGNING WORKPLACES AND CULTURE

Background
I’ve been  responsible for creating and harboring an inclusive, fun, and thriving company culture at places like Tenjin, Planet Labs, and Solana. This includes instituting happy hours, wellness events, themed month activities and self-guided resources, book readings, colloquiums, and holiday parties. Often times I would collaborate  It was essential to talk closely with my coworkers in order to understand each department’s needs, as well as the individual needs of the employees so I could best create positive change. In order to accommodate the entire workplace, I had to learn to be a thoughtful and creative leader.

Community Organizing
During my time as a Workplace Coordinator, I have also led multiple company events that aim to do good for the community. For Earth Day 2022, I organized a neighborhood cleanup which attracted around 20 people who cleaned up the SoMa neighborhood as a company. I coordinated with the city to ensure proper disposal of the cleanup, finalized pickup routes, and marketed the event as well as a pizza party following the cleanup itself. It was a well-received event that brought the company together while also taking collective action to create a positive change.

Planet Holiday PartyPlanning a West Coast holiday party for a company of over 800 employees in the middle of a pandemic is no easy feat. At Planet, I had to work around a constantly-changing event date, multiple time zones, hundreds of attendees, and ensuring the health and safety of everyone. I worked closely with the Director of Workplace to procure an event space that had enough capacity and offered both indoor and outdoor options that best considered covid safety measures. I also had to take the project from start to finish through working with vendors, negotiating contracts, designing an event flow, and creating a celebratory ambiance in the venue itself. After three months of planning, the event had a turnout of over three hundred employees and was widely praised as a success. These pictures show myself and the CEO of the company dancing during the later part of the evening.

Employee Engagement Events
During my career in Workplace Management, I helped maintain a positive company culture through designing events that would bring people together. This included fun activities such as bringing vendors to do coffee tastings, designing company “badges” for employee pets, making pancakes during satellite launches, and planning an in-office celebration to commemorate going public among many other activities. Additionally, I sought out local artists to create custom neon artwork that represented the origin story of Solana to add as office decor. I also spearheaded a redesign of the office snack area by switching from single-use snacks to installing bulk snack dispensers as a way to minimize the carbon footprint of the company. These fun, engaging activities helped foster camaraderie and wellness by creating a strong sense of community.
